Variable home loan rates today
Every variable rate Australian lenders publish that anyone could take, read this morning. No lender pays to be here.
Rates checked Friday 18 September at 5:49 am (Sydney time) ยท browse all the data
For a home you live in, paying it down, the going variable rate is 5.84%, read Friday 18 September. Easy Street, Greater Bank Limited and Virgin Money advertise it or less. The lowest anyone publishes is 5.79%, from Easy Street. Half of the 292 loans open to anyone sit between 6.09% and 7.03%.
The going rate is the rate at which a third distinct lender appears in the sorted list. It is not the lowest rate anyone publishes. One lender's price is worth nothing to a borrower that lender says no to.
Read your own rate against it. The comparison says how much of any difference a phone call to your own lender can close, and how much would take an application.

The three that set the going rate
Easy Street, Greater Bank Limited, Virgin Money. The third of them, Virgin Money, publishes Virgin Money Lite Home Loan at 5.84%, and that is the going rate. Each has a page: every lender.

How this is worked out, and what it does not tell you
How it is worked out
- Every rate comes from the lender's own feed, published under the Consumer Data Right. Nobody types a rate in. The rates are read each morning, and the figures on this page are taken once, from that morning's read.
- A rate counts only if anyone could take it. Loans for a particular group only, by their published conditions or by their name, are left out. So is any lender the capture has stopped reaching.
- Each loan is counted once per profile, at its lowest advertised rate. A lender that prices five bands by how much you owe is one loan here, not five.
- Variable rates only. Fixed rates are on their own page, by term.
What it does not tell you
- These are advertised rates, not offers. The rate a lender writes for you depends on you and on the lender. It can say no.
- They are prices for a new customer. What a lender charges the customers it already has is published nowhere.
- The rate is not the cost. Fees sit outside it. What a comparison rate adds measures how far.
The data behind this page is free to download, so any figure here can be checked against the file, and the file against the lender.
Free, and not advice. It knows only what the lender publishes, not what you could negotiate. A licensed broker does this for a living. Who made this. What this site collects.
